Building Trades

Opportunities in the building trades industry are growing. Employment can be found in a wide variety of construction-related occupations including home building, light commercial construction, finish carpentry, framing, and estimating.

The basis of this course is an introduction to topics such as carpentry, blueprint reading, electricity, and painting. Students engage in classroom instruction, lab experiences and outdoor projects such as constructing a house or other building. Classroom instruction involves the introduction of more technical information pertaining to the building trades industry and advanced skills in construction.

The job outlook for graduates of Northland Career Center's Building Trades Program is encouraging. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that job opportunities for carpenters and construction laborers is expected to be excellent over the 2000-2010 period, and well-trained workers will have especially favorable opportunities.

**Program completers can receive advanced credit through the Builders' Training Center in a registered apprenticeship craft.
**Recommended prerequisites: Ability to read tape measure, add and subtract fractions, and calculate dimensions in feet and inches.
**Recommended minimum 10th grade reading level.
